What is the argument for why an insurance company won't pay for home births?

by San Francisco Home Insurance on July 11, 2010

I have been presented evidence that a home birth or birthing center is a) cheaper than a hospital environment and b) safer for the mother and child for the typical cases.

If that is true, then why do insurance companies, and regulations in california, require a hospital birth. If it is in the insurance industries best interest to reduce expenses and limit complications, that seems like an irrational choice. There must be more to it. Please explain.

When pushed most will cover a home birth. The problem is that some states actually block insurance companies from paying for certain care providers, obviously midwives are the usual ones. Up until recently only CNM were legal to practice in Missouri and they must be over seen by an OB. Where are you going to find that? You aren’t. The only way to have a home birth in Missouri until recently was to either do it unassisted or through an under ground network of midwives that you obviously couldn’t bill insurance for since their services were illegal. The laws in Missouri changed about a year ago but plenty of other states have similar laws on the books.

watch the Business of being Born. Its a decent documentary (all though the make it sound like hospitals are out to get you) and it talks about that alittle bit.

maybe because one doctor can deliver more babies in the hospital then if the doctor did home birth visits. There is nurses and equipment in the hospital on site if anything happens versus a home birth. I’m not sure just making a couple guesses
